POST HISTORY

American Legion Post 295 received its permanent Charter on December 7th, 1983. Post 295 is a 501(c)19, Veterans Service Organization, incorporated in Maryland.

Post 295 is homeless, which means we do not have a Post Home* of our own. However, Post 295 has been successfully carrying out the programs of the American Legion since 1983 without a Post Home.*Post 295 would gladly accept donations of property for the purpose of founding a Post Home.Members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion comprise the Legion family, which has a combined membership of nearly 4.2 million Nationally.

Post 295 once had a home locate under the former Safeway on the Southeast corner from Quince Orchard High School. At the time thwy were renting, when the owners were looking to sell the property, the Post was unable to keep up and closed its doors. Membership dwindled from 176 to 27 members in 2002.

Membership increase since 2002,

1246%

In 2002, while performing his duties as County Commander, Bob Ouellette, met with Post Commander Rudy Wagner and Adjutant Rick Price. After some discussion, Ouellette, decided to transfer to Post 295, the rest you could say is history. Almost immediately, Wagner and Price asked Ouellette, to be the Post Commander, he declined he request until the end of his 2nd term as Montgomery County Commander (2001-02 & 2002-03).

In January 2003, Legionnaires from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial American Legion Post 295 founded Operation Provide Comfort to assist wound and sick military members with personal care needs while they are undergoing rehabilitation at the area’s military hospitals. In the Spring the Legion Riders organized a Poker Run for OPC. County Commander Bob Ouellette and Cpl Eddie Wright a Marine from Walter Reed were interviewed by WUSA's Phyllis Armstrong to promote the event. Even with the promotion, there was little turn-out. The follow on story on the 11pm news brought out more donations than the Poker Run would have raised if the ride had been successful.  The interviews are available below.
