Resilience

Chronic activation of the fight-or-flight response results in wear and tear both physically and mentally. Several studies show that the TM technique decreases chronic stress, including greater physiological relaxation during meditation, reduced stress levels outside meditation, and a quicker response to stress.

Two pilot studies examined the effects of Transcendental Meditation on the symptoms of PTS. In both cases, veterans experienced dramatic reductions in symptoms of PTS and increased quality of life.

This recently conducted pilot examines the efficacy of the TM technique for treating OEF/OIF veterans with PTS. By the eighth week of practicing TM, veterans experienced a 50 percent reduction in PTS symptoms, according to the Clinician-Administered PTS Scale (the gold standard of PTS testing). The veterans also reported decreased depression and improved quality of life—showing a greater ability to return to their lives after the war. This study replicates and extends the results of earlier performed research, shown in charts 2 and 3.

This landmark study, conducted at a Denver Veterans Center, pioneered the investigation into the effects of the TM technique on veterans suffering from PTS. The veterans were randomly assigned to TM or conventional counseling. After just three months of practice, the veterans experienced across-the-board reductions in emotional numbness, anxiety, and PTS symptoms.

PTSD Affects Everyone
            - Two General discuss their experience with PTSD

Two Army generals talked to CNNs Barbara Starr about their experience with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in hopes that it will convince more suffering soldiers to come forward.
Brig. General Gary S. Patton and Gen. Carter Ham have both sought counseling for the emotional trauma of their time in the Iraq war.

One of our soldiers in that unit, Spec. Robert Unruh, took a gunshot wound to the torso, I was involved in medevacing him off the battlefield. And in a short period of time, he died before my eyes, Patton told CNN in an exclusive interview. Thats a memory [that] will stay with me the rest of my life.

Ham was the commander in Mosul when a suicide bomber blew up a mess tent. Twenty-two people died.

The 21st of December, 2004, worst day of my life. Ever, Ham said. To this day I still ask myself what should I have done differently, what could I have done as the commander responsible that would have perhaps saved the lives of those soldiers, sailors, civilians.

Both generals have been back from Iraq for years, but still deal with some of the symptoms of the stress they experienced.

Creating Resilient Warriors through Transcendental Meditation

The Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple and easily implementable approach for holistically developing soldier well-being. Hundreds of peer-reviewed studies and tens of millions of dollars in funding from the National Institutes of Health reveal the technique’s efficacy for improving the five areas described in the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program. Findings include:

1

Physical health: Reducing stress and stress-related illness and improving overall health and longevity (see Cardiovascular DiseaseDecreased Healthcare Utilization,Resistance to Stress, and Peak Performance)

2

Emotional health: Reducing anxiety and depression and increasing contentment, integrity, and ability to resist peer pressure (see Emotional Health and Spiritual Health)

3

Social and family health: Increasing tolerance and improving personal and family relationships (see Social Health)

4

Spiritual: Increasing self-confidence, moral maturity, and self-actualization—allowing the soldier to deeply connect with his or her own internal compass as a guide throughout life (see Spiritual Health)
